6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? [Keelan]

5) How did you attract/address your audience? [Keelan]

- I definitely think that our target audience would take a deep interest and thoroughly enjoy our film, mainly down to the fact that right from the start of the movie an enigma is created.

- In our thriller, part of the plot is that the protagonist is a retired agent, and he ends up be all of a sudden back onto the front line of it all. I think that our audience of 18 to 35 year olds will enjoy this, this is one of the many ways we have addressed our audience.

- Part of our story is that our protagonist is trying to turn his life around by becoming a 'normal' man with a family, therefore we have made him to appear as normal as possible. This is a very well known thing to have in a Thriller, therefore this is a way that we attracted our audience.

- Although our protagonist appeared to be a normal citizen, there is a side to him, a dark side perhaps, with his 'old life' and dirty secrets that's hidden. At least until he comes back into action. I think this was a very important way in how we addressed and attracted our audience.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product? [Keelan]

- At first, our main target audience was teenagers, specifically around the age of fifteen. However as we were going through the production process it was identified and agreed upon that this was maybe a bit too specific for the type of movie we were creating.

- If we had to choose a new target audience for our product it would most likely be in the 18 to 35 region. This is because it would still gain interest of some teenagers, as well as the newly identified group of middle aged males.

- We also used other films as comparisons to choose our audience for our thriller for newer, larger budget films such as Inception, Taken and The Bourne Legacy.  All of these films have a rough audience of 18 to 35 year old males.

- We also chose this audience as they would be the most likely to be engaged in this type of film. Most men in this age group take an interest in these type of mysterious, cryptic thriller movies.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? [Keelan]

- Our thriller movie would be with a independent British distributor, with us having a rather low budget. Therefore it would be very unlikely that the movie will be available in such locations such as a Vue or Odeon cinema. This is because both Vue and Odeon are very large chain cinemas which distribute large budget films.

- As our film is only being distributed by a low budget media institution local Picture houses would be the most feasible location for our movie to be shown. It would be shown in a Picture house such as the Duke of York in Brighton or the Picture House Uckfield.

- As the movie is low budget the main methods of advertisement would most likely be by word of mouth, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.), posters in the local area and possibly a short advertisement in the local newspaper.

- Giving that there will be a much lower number of audience it is very likely that as soon as the thriller movie is in the picture houses that it would also be put onto DVD at the same time. Whereas if it was a high budget movie it would not be released onto DVD until about 3 to 5 months after the cinema showings have finished.

- There is also another possibility that the thriller could be released onto instant streaming services such as LoveFilm and NetFlix. There would be a very small possibility that this could happen, however, services such as these do also have some low budget movies available for their subscribers to access.

- It is also a possibility that the thriller could be shown as on TV maybe a few years after release on channels like Film4 or ITV4. Although this would be a rather long time after the release of the movie, it can still possibly bring in revenue.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups? [Keelan]

Who is being represented by your product?

- In our first scene it is not clear what social groups the antagonist belongs to. This is due to only the hands of the character being shown, therefore the audience is unable to identify the social groups the individual may belong to.
- What we can tell from this is that the antagonist is very precise, and probably in everything he does. This is identifiable by when the character is typing on the keyboard.

- The other character that is represented in the thriller opening is in the second scene. He is the protagonist. For the protagonist we have represented him in a very precise social group. This is middle class. The most obvious and clear way for the audience to identify the class of the individual is by the setting.

How are they being represented?

- We have tried to keep our main character that is viewable to the audience, in scene 2, as close to our chosen social group of middle class as much as possible. We have done this mainly through the use of mise en scene, in this case through the characters costume. We have dressed him in trousers, a shirt and glasses in our second scene to make him appear as a middle class, middle aged gentleman.

- The costume was a very important factor as if he were to wear a different type of costume, for example, jogging bottoms and a hooded jumper, he could be easily misread by the audience and put into a completely different social group, such as lower class.

- We also used the setting to construct a representation of our characters specific social group, as well as the mobile phone in the scene.

- The mobile telephone that we used in this scene is an Apple iPhone. Although it may seem in these modern days that many younger people own one of these, especially in the 13-21 year old range, we did not use it because of that. We have used it as it is a rather expensive phone, therefore an addition into helping represent that the character was in a slightly higher social group than some others.

- As well as that, we used a rather modern house as the setting. It is clean, organised and although it isn't a stately home it is definitely a home of a middle class individual. Again, helping to represent the social group we was aiming for, a middle class man.

Why have we represented the character in this particular way?

- We were trying to create a typical stereotype of a middle aged man of a middle class to make him appear almost 'like the next man'. We also have done this to get it across to the audience that this character was the protagonist. Rather than the antagonist.

- We specifically decided on having our protagonist in the middle class social group so that the audience could easily side with him, and even potentially feel empathy for him. Thus feeling the opposite for the hidden and mysterious antagonist.

5.) How did you attract/address your audience? [Jake]

How did you Attract/Address your audience?

-Our audience was 18-35 males, our job to attract viewers was manifested through the story of deceit, Violence and gripping twits, the Spy thriller genre as a whole has already proved a phenomenally popular genre category so we felt like aiming for a film genre that had already proved successful was a very good start.

-As the protagonist begins to uncover the plot of murder that is planned for him and his fellow comrades the militaristic, clinical and highly professional training of a top spy becomes present, this adds suspense and action to the film and appeals strongly to the male viewers. His journey is one too be in awe of and this appeals to all ages as the protagonist is in the end labelled as something of a hero as he saves himself and the rest of his surviving colleaguesfrom the corrupted chain of murders.

-Most people aspire to be wealthy and our protagonist is perceived as being financially well off, Mise en scene with his hair, clothing, props and setting all suggest him being wealthy, we built a character who in retirement had been well nourished and relaxed but still maintained his expertise in the field of espionage. We felt this character was quite unique and still had the vulnerabilities of retirement as he is pushed harder and harder to free himself from being a target.

With dialouge we aimed for it to represent the characters, the protagonist for example is direct and would use terminology of his field, we also wanted him to have empathy and therefore be liked by the audience.
The antagonist would be opposite in all the good ways and show no remorse or empathy, we want the audience to dislike him but wanted an older audience so they could understand his skill in his trained field, even if he way using it for murder.

The use of camera would attempt to highlight the protagonist in a good way, possibly eye level close ups to represent honesty or high angle to suggest moral superiority over the antagonist. Editing would be quite slow paced at the beginning but as more and more tales of corruption come into play the editing would get faster and faster and provide the action that our age audience would enjoy, especially if the right language and realistic violence were used.

4.) Who would be the audience for your media product? [Jake]

What Would be the audience for your media product?

 Planning Audience age.
-Straight away we aimed our product at those age 15 and upwards, eventually as pre-planning became more detailed we realized that the audience was too vague and not at all an exact demographic. We then made a few small adjustments and decided on setting our target audience age at 18-35. We done this because we felt the story line represented itself more appropriately, at least in comparison to other popular thrillers surrounding this age category, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the Bourne Identity are perfect examples of the target audience we hoped to appeal to.

 Similar Thrillers.
-Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Bourne Identity are very good examples of  the thriller audiences we hoped to replicate. As our thriller and these films have something in common (the Covert confusion mixed with struggles of everyday life of a spy) adults will find the product much more enjoyable and much easier to relate to. As our Thriller has many twists and sub plots an older audience is yet again more appropriate as they generally have a better capacity to understand what is happening but to also comprehend the protagonists life in greater detail.

Why did we choose the 18-35 age audience.
-Violence is also a theme which surfaces a few times through the story and is a main theme at the end, when the antagonist is revealed. When appealing to ages 18-35 it is imperative that our thriller remained realistic so the audience stay engaged and convinced, to do this and to match the situation the protagonist finds himself in certain features of film have to be used which make the movie age rating 18, this matches nicely to our target audience as violence and verbal cursing should be present to ensure the films realism.

We also decided to set the target audience for male consumption, this was decided upon as a very large proportion of the characters are male and the action, dialogue and plot represent more of a stereotypical male interest, this is also correlated with movies like Taken, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Bourne Identity which appeals to the 18-35 male audience.
Movies that link into the age audience we tried to target:
-Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
-Bourne Identity.
-Safe House.
-Taken.
-Unknown.

3.) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? [Jake]

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

With the very low budget our film would be based on it is very unlikely we would receive interest from big film companies (National or International.) or large cinema complexes, for the film to be successful and to still reach and audience demographic independent cinema's will be a good choice.
Independent local picture houses may be a good idea and picture houses like Duke Of York in Brighton may be a good venue as it is local but also subject to a large audience but local advertising will be necessary to inform potential viewers about the product.
Smaller film studio's may also be a good idea as the audience they cater for may prefer lower budget film or simply smaller picture houses, the audience will obviously be smaller but may also attract an audience which appreciates the low budget movie scene, which in turn makes the demographic more accurate.

If no interest from local independent picture houses are available it may be necessary to take the Thriller straight to DVD, In the case of a straight-to-DVD movie retail stores will be heavily relied upon as this will be the main source of distribution. We will rely heavily on big movie distributors like Block Buster, HMV and Zavvi.
With the recent arrival of online movie streaming websites such as LoveFilm, Netflix and NowTV it may be possible for our film to be viewed on these sites, unlike physical copies digital copies of our film will be much more reasonable on a smaller budget but the sites run on a selective subscription fee a month, this increases the chance for our thrillers success because more people are likely to not mind watching much smaller budget films, it is also more common to find 'straight to copy.' movies which never came out in Cinema's, these are very common on sites like LoveFilm and our thriller could easily merge into this category of distribution.

2.) How does your media product represent particular social groups? [Jake]

How does your media represent particular social groups?

-Who is being represented through your product?
Two characters are seen in our thriller opening and both are conveyed in very different ways, First seen is the antagonist, a character whose gender, age and ethnicity are kept hidden as only a very small part of his body is framed.
Our protagonist was represented as a young male whose ethnicity is white British in his late twenties to early thirties, he was meant to belong to upper middle class.

How are they represented?
-The Antagonist was hard to represent due to the fact their face or body is not actually seen. Despite this, Mise En scene helped us communicate some antagonist traits. The dark low key lighting helped communicate secrecy and danger and the slow editing pace made all actions seem deliberate and clinical, this was done to create the impression of a powerful foe to the protagonist and to also indicate the characters professionalism and efficiency.
-
The protagonist was completely juxtaposed to the antagonist, this was to create a contrast in there lifestlyes and personality. Use of framing and camerawork made sure a good portion of the protagonists body was in frame at all times, this was to create the effect of an open personality and one that can be trusted, Props such as a brand new phone and glasses hint toward professionalism and also wealth and the high lighting also reinforce the fact the character seen is the protagonist. The phone, an Apple Iphone is popular with young adults but we used it simply because its statement of wealth, this is necessary as spies and agents are on very good salaries.
-His attire is also important as he is smartly dressed but also seems comfortable and relaxed, this was to show the characters recent retirement state as the audience finds out as the thriller would progress.
We wanted to attach as many positive connotations as we could on the protagonist as it was important the audience liked him, we done this by the influence of his social standard, smart clothes and a clean image seemed to fulfill this and we also made sure the characters posture was good as this added some clues towards a good personality.

-To further demonstrate the protagonists professionalism we used sound concerning the mobile phone, in the scene were an unknown caller rings it was very important to set an appropriate ring tine, we aimed at something which was stereotypically standard, this also gave the protagonist a clinical theme and suggested subtle correlation between him and the antagonist.

Why were they represented like this?
-Our Antagonist and Protagonist are completely juxtaposed, one remains covert and hidden and the other is open and seemingly ordinary, this was used to convey both sides of their careers as Agents but it is also strong indication of how both characters have acted after they retired.
-It was absolutely imperative that the protagonists first opinion was correct, we wanted the audience to perceive him as a clean ordinary individual living a life most people can relate too, but when the story transpires and his past is revealed the character is represented with moral obligations which viewers may disagree or agree on but the main point was to make sure that when the journey is finally completed the audience can feel pity for the character but also be glad he has survived.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

5) How did you attract/ address your audience? [James]

Why our audience will enjoy our film

-Our audience will be interested in our film because the enigma that create and keep throughout the opening.

our younger audience will be particularly interested in the dark nature  of our antagonist and his plot line, this will keep our younger audience watching.

Our idea of bringing a retired agent to a "back in action" character will interest the audience and raise question like why is he out of action.

We tried to give our protagonist some characteristics of people in modern life, this includes him trying to turn his life around leaving all the rugged and tough guy man but is brought back in for a final time.

We used a wide variety of shot length and angle for both our characters, using more close ups and ECU's with our antagonist to give some mystery and secrecy in the character which will interest the audience to find out more about him.

We also decided to give our main protagonist a very skeptical and troubled side, this is because he is an former agent. within the scene he is shown in he body language and facial expressions show that he may be in a rush and is either frightened or taking precautions. in the scene up stairs we see him using his hands, we cannot see what he is doing but as well as creating an enigma as to why hes doing that people my think he is packing a bag. by not revealing what is there we can attract the audience so they can use there imagination.

Our opening tries to create  a character which by the end of our thriller should be one that our audience feel towards. The plot of our story is one that has a lot of loss of family and friends, this leads to our audience embracing emotions towards our character so that our audience will empathize with our protagonist.

In our first scene we have shown our antagonist to try and attract our audience. How we achieved this is by giving a sneak peak into the  of the characteristics of this character. in the first scene we use Low key lighting and ECU's to create a dark and mysterious character which will attract people to find out the rest of the story. because we used a darker narrative we attract all kinds of people together with ECU's of computers for a modern approach but with an official envelope for the older fashioned people.

We would continue to use both types of shot length and angle for the characters in the rest of the film until the climax at the final stages of the story.

We hope to have a twist ending like seen here in Unbreakable.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product? [James]

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our Audience

-Our first thoughts for our specified audience was 15 and above, this was agreed on in the per-production stage towards the end of our film when editing we then realized that age rating was too varied, this meant that we need to put a solid age rating on it.

-If we had chosen to take a normal age category to put our film into we may have chosen a category like 18-35, this is because our audience is ranged from younger teenagers to middle aged.

-The story of our film resides around our main character Terrence, this character will go and hunt down and uncover the plot to murder him and his team. from this we saw that males would be an ideal audience because the nature of our story being a dark and violent one. the fact that the characters we use are extremely brutal and very tough because of there job.

-The more tough and brutal males appear to males more because often females are more interested in a man who is quite compassionate where as males look for the toughest and the ones that show no mercy.

-We also think the our product will attract more males than females, this is because of our story and our characters, both our protagonist and antagonist are both male and our story includes a list which contain mostly male, we were not trying to be sexist but in the end most of a desired character turned out male.

-The reason we think our thriller will will attract 18-35 males is because our film is closely followed by the techniques used by newer films such as taken and Inception, all these films have a large number of males but Taken is a good example of a film that middle aged men will be more inclined to watch this is because there story is driven by a father fighting for his daughter, this improves a chance of males with family's watching our film.

-Most males find a much darker and sinister story to be much more enjoyable than females do, I think this is because hormones in males find larger amounts of violence in films to be interesting and can deal more with just senseless violence than a deep storyline

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? [James]

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our thriller being made by an independent UK Business, our budget will be somewhere in the lower region of the market, this means that it will be very unlikely that out film would be distributed by the multiplex cinemas that show all the high budget Hollywood film like, Cineworld and the Odeon. becasue of our budget being low the distribution in cinemas will be a great smaller and shorter, although this may come a major problem our film will be distribute by the lower budget smaller cinemas so it is more likely that our Thriller will be played at local Picturehouses like the Duke of York Picturehouse or the Greenwich Picturehouse in London.

Because of our independence we feel like Smaller picturehouses are a good idea this is because will have a good attention from locals or many who enjoy the smaller places, it is also due to the fact that we would not be able to support having our cinema in the larger cinemas because our budget may just make the bigger cinemas or not at all. We can gather a small amount of members of the picturehouses, we will then draw up papers will all costs and share prices and finish agreeing how long and how frequent our film will be shown. if they are interested they will take on our film as one of there projects and display the film as agreed by the board members.

In the case that our film is less popular the most likely and most reliable way to distribute is to go straight to DVD, this will then lead to us relying on retail stores to gather sales on the film.
it is likely that if our film goes straight to DVD then it mean that it wasnt deemed popular enough and aswell as going straight onto DVD which will make profits fall it will not be produced on Blu-ray which is the up and coming next generation Movie format.
Blockbuster and HMV are two good examples of retail stores that may sell our film if it goes straight to DVD,

In the case that our film goes straight to DVD there is a chance that it can be redeemed by internet streaming website, this could include Netflix and Lovefilm which are becoming popular due to the instant streaming that you just need to click and watch.

In current times this is a gamble because these forms of watching film has only just released in 2012 and may prove a success or may become shadowed and then rise in the future when the film has passed.

After a few years we mat then get picked up by ITV or BBC for free showing TV it is unlikely that BBC will pick it up but lower budget channels like VIVA or Film4 may chose it as a nights premiere.

Alternatively we look towards looking on on-line only stores. These stores are becoming more popular as the years go on, this would be especially good and will collaborate with if were to go straight to DVD. Having our product being distributed on-line may it be a physical DVD or a download code and having the option to have retail stores is a wise decision.

If our product becomes popular we will not need to worry about it because our download store wont run out of copies at all so we can continue to sell. There is only concern will download and that piracy which is a big problem in the on-line distribution.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups? [James]

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Who is being represented by your product

-In our thriller there are two clear characters that are represented, the first is the antagonist which is the harder to represent.
-For all but the hands of the antagonist are out of frame but the hands show that this character is one who is male and very careful and precise.
-The other character is the protagonist; we created a stereotype of a middle aged mid to high class male.
How are they being represented?

-We kept to our social group that we chose mostly through “Mise en Scene” we gave him a costume that gives the impression that he is a well-dressed and higher class person, this is example in the second setting when we see him in a shirt trousers and glasses.

-This was important to us because we needed him to look like a male who is of a higher class and the costume is the way it was achieved. We gave him a stereotypical costume to show this because we think it is clear indication of class, an example is having someone in a Jacket and Jeans worn at a low height shows a lower class and less respect, this is the opposite of we created and wanted.

-Both the setting that we used being a house corridor and the mobile phone are both very important to how we represented our character.

-The house that we used as our setting is simple yet clean showing that our character is not just clean and dresses respectably but also he keeps his life tidy, our plan was to create the idea that the protagonist is just a generic middle classed male and that there was nothing special.

-The mobile phone we used was one that apple made being the iPhone, this phone could be seen as a phone that a lot of teenagers have and use because it is quite a modern phone, this is contrasted to the approach we used. This approach was that the phone is quite expensive to both use and keep to portray a higher class.

Why?

-We created a stereotype of a middle classed male to create an enigma and so people will ask “why is the person here” and “what importance does he play” also to show that he is our protagonist having no props that indicate he that he maybe otherwise.

-We chose our character to be middle classed because we wanted a character that has been working as an agent for a while. The character is middle aged because hes been working for many years and now with a daughter to worry about he is trying to change his life to fit his family into his life more.

-We set our target audience as a group with very similar ages to our character, this was important because then our audience will have a better understanding of the character and can relate and connect to him better than younger people.
